Family Advocate, San Luis Obispo

Job Summary
The Family Advocate functions as a support person for family members and loved ones of adult consumers with psychiatric disabilities, with County Mental Health Services staff, our local National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Chapter, and other service providers. This part-time position provides education information and assistance to families and loved ones of adult persons with mental illness.  The Family Advocate educates, assists and empowers family members and loved ones about County Mental Health Services, our local National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Chapter, and other service available.  This position provides support, education, information, referral, and community outreach for families of adult consumers with psychiatric disabilities, and works collaboratively with agencies within the mental health system.  The Family Advocate also provides education and outreach to the community regarding program services, mental illness, services available and helps to promote the reduction of stigma for families. The Family Advocate will uphold the program philosophy in all duties performed and promote social rehabilitation, recovery and wellness

Compensation
Part-Time, 20 hours per week . Entry level $13.86 per hour.  Wage negotiable based on education and/or experience.

Minimum Requirements
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent preferred. Must be available some evenings and weekends. Spanish bilingual/bicultural is a plus. Must have personal vehicle to use for business purposes. Strong interpersonal skills and oral/written communication skills. Able to deal effectively with a variety of people and personality types. Computer skills, including database programs.  Knowledge of mental illness treatment and medications, as well as related systems such as County Mental Health, Social Security, Vocational Rehabilitation etc. a plus. Must be responsible, and reliable, and possess problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Facilitator training a plus. Knowledge of substance abuse issues as they relate to people with psychiatric disabilities a plus. Preference will be given to a family member or loved one of a person with a psychiatric disability. Conditions of employment include: must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid CA Driver’s License, minimum of 2 years driving experience, reliable transportation, proof of auto insurance, and DMV driving record that meets TMHA’s current vehicle insurance requirements.  May be required to utilize personal vehicle and auto insurance.  At the time of hire, other conditions of employment are to comply with a T.B. skin test or chest x-ray indicating a negative tuberculosis result, and receipt of a criminal record clearance through fingerprinting.  Must be able to successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.
