Position Filled-Homeless Services Counselor - Santa Maria

Program: Good Samaritan Emergency Shelter

Job Summary:
Transitions – Mental Health Association (TMHA) has an opening for a Homeless Services Counselor.  The target population will be Santa Maria emergency shelter campus residents who have a mental health disorder or who have a substance abuse and mental health co-occurring disorder.  Participants may have any number of minor children.  This is a collaborative project with Santa Barbara County Department of Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Services (ADMHS), Good Samaritan Services and Transitions – Mental Health Association as lead agencies.  Work will be performed at the Good Samaritan Shelter Campus located at 401 E Morrison, Santa Maria.  This program will emphasize rapid access to mental health and substance abuse treatment and services.  Therefore collaboration between the Counselor in this position, ADMHS CARES North, Foster Road Clinic and CBO programs will be important in assisting in the recovery process for individuals served by the program.


The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for the provision of therapeutic assessment and treatment services to the shelter residents and their families in order to facilitate mental health treatment.  In addition, the Mental Health Counselor provides social work services for the client, runs groups, and builds linkages to other agencies.  Where appropriate the Mental Health Counselor will insure transition to the appropriate ADMHS Care Team and will be involved in Good Samaritan shelter team meetings.  The Mental Health Clinician will work closely with the Public Health Department professionals on-site to provide a complete Bio-Psychosocial assessment when a mental health co-occurring or substance abuse disorder is suspected.

Minimum Requirements:
Must be a licensed/waivered/registered mental health professional.  Spanish Bilingual preferred.  Expertise in the delivery of trauma informed treatment required. Experience in dual diagnosis treatment required. Exposure to note writing, record keeping, typing and use of a computer is highly desired. Strong interpersonal skills and oral/written communication skills; able to deal effectively with a variety of people and personality types regardless of ethnic, racial, religious background or socio-economic level. Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices while acting in such a manner as to assure at all times, maximum safety to one’s self, fellow employees, clients, and other persons contacted through TMHA business. Conditions of employment include: must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid CA Driver’s License, minimum of 2 years driving experience, reliable transportation, proof of auto insurance, and DMV driving record that meets TMHA’s current vehicle insurance requirements.  May be required to utilize personal vehicle and auto insurance.  At the time of hire, other conditions of employment are to comply with a T.B. skin test or chest x-ray indicating a negative tuberculosis result,  and receipt of a criminal record clearance through fingerprinting.  Must be able to successfully complete First Aid and CPR training.

Compensation:
Full-Time position with generous benefits.  $18.48 to $24.00 per hour (depending on experience)
